John Soda Delivers New Project ‘Death Awaits’

With his new project ‘Death Awaits‘ still making its round on the internet, Texas-based John Soda managed to sit down with the SL team for a quick Q&A where we discuss early influences, his latest project, and how he’s been keeping busy during these times. Check it out down below.

For those who don’t know, where are you from?

I’m from Denton, Texas. I’ve lived here since I was in 6th grade.

Did you have any early music influences? Who were your favorite artists growing up?

The earliest music influences I had was probably my dad because he would always play rock/indie hip-hop around me when I was young. My favorite artist at the time had to be Earl Sweatshirt, Mac Miller and Tyler The Creator still on my tops.

During this quarantine, people have been keeping themselves occupied in unique ways. How have you been keeping yourself busy?

I’ve just been making music and hustling. Also, I’ve noticed I’ve been drinking a lot more [laughs.]

Let’s jump into the music a bit. You recently dropped your new project ‘Death Awaits.’ How did the concept for it come together?

Really when COVID started is around when I started creating the project and the fear of death from the virus inspired the title. The album really goes into a lot of grief I had because of this girl. And the feeling of “I gotta separate to elevate” but it hurts.

Do you have a process for song creation or is it more of a spur of the moment thing?

It’s a spur of the moment like 80% of the time the other 20% I be writing the songs.

How would you say your music has transitioned over time? What new sounds or tools have you added or subtracted to your creative process?

I feel like my music has gotten better over time like each song/beat I make. I started using a lot of violin synths in my music lately and guitar.

You plan on rolling out any visuals off of the project?

I have 4 videos out for the project already I definitely plan on making more.

What do you like to get into outside of work? Whether it be with your team or solo?

When I’m not making music or hustling I usually am kicking it with my roommate or in my room on the game. I don’t really go out much anymore because of COVID.

What can we expect from you moving forward? Or is everything under wraps?

More music and more videos I’m already working on my next tape. Also new merch.

    Spotlights
