With his debut album Are U Down? slated to release September 10th via 4AD, NY-based artist/producer Spencer. delivers the album’s lead single Lonely As I Ever Was. Clocking in at a little under 4-minutes in streaming length, the track builds throughout the song with Spencer. guiding us with his sky-soaring vocals, perfectly demonstrating his reach. There’s a sly element of funk, with Spencer. pitting his melodic prowess against a methodical rhythmic body in a way that makes for a compelling listen.
In the press release, Spencer. revealed that “Lonely as I Ever Was was the last song I wrote for my record, I even made the outro the same day. The theme of this one is basically from the song Next Lifetime by Erykah Badu, and I even reference it in the lyrics. Kinda like being on the other side of her situation, begging someone in a relationship to consider a relationship with you.”
Directed by Rooftop, the accompanying visuals tap into Spencer.’s love of aesthetics and featuring dream-like sequences and rich colors. Throughout the video, we see Spencer. sauntering the Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn serenading his crush with his soothing vocals, until the closing scene finds him recovering from the events that took place the previous night.
