Prin$e Alexander, the Philadelphia-area songwriter and producer, has never been one to stay quiet about his ambitions. He’s on a mission to reshape how music sounds and feels, pushing boundaries with a signature mix of soul, funk, and urban influences that’s fast-paced, melodic, and full of bounce. That fusion isn’t just for show; it’s the backbone of a vision that feels uniquely his.
His latest 10-track project, “When The Moon Turns Dark,” is a clear evolution from his previous single “Suffer In Silence,” which introduced us to his unflinching approach to vulnerability. Reflecting on that transition, he explains, “’Suffer In Silence’ was about the quiet battles, the pain you keep behind closed doors. ‘When The Moon Turns Dark’ takes that pain and places it outside, under the night sky. It’s still personal, but this time it’s more about confronting the shadows, not hiding from them. There’s a sense of reckoning, but also release.”
That spirit of confrontation is matched by the cinematic scope of the album. Alexander doesn’t just write songs, he scores mental movies. “I kept seeing scenes in my mind, eclipses, abandoned streets at night, flickering lights,” he says of the writing process. “The songs feel like little films to me, where tension builds and breaks. I wanted the production to feel like walking alone in a place where something big is about to happen but you’re not sure if it’s beautiful or terrifying.” This statement can be heard on tracks like “Fall Down” where the ominous production builds in the intro before his crooning vocals take the spotlight. Or “Where My Light Glows,” where steady, layered production and clear melodies carry that same cinematic quality, unfolding with a measured sense of anticipation.
It’s no accident that the tracklist has a deliberate arc. He designed the album to be more than a collection of songs, to be an emotional journey. “The album moves from isolation to confrontation to acceptance,” he explains. “I wanted listeners to feel like they’re descending into something dark, sitting with it, and then finding their way back out, maybe not fully healed, but changed. Every track is a step in that journey.”
But even within the grand design, there are small, personal details that reveal the core of who he is right now. One moment, in particular, stands out to him: “There’s a quiet synth swell buried within the chorus of ‘Nirvana’, it’s subtle, but it feels like holding your breath in the middle of chaos. That’s where I am right now: trying to find calm in the noise.”
“When The Moon Turns Dark” is more than just a record. It’s Prin$e Alexander’s invitation to step into the shadows with him. To sit in the darkness, face it, and emerge transformed. It’s the work of an artist unwilling to compromise, determined to make music that not only sounds different but feels necessary.
